8 Tips to get Your Marketing Up to Snuff

It’s never too late to come up with your plan for marketing. And to inspire you, here are 8 things to keep in mind as you get your marketing act together.

Before we jump in, keep in mind it’s really important to take some time and think through these. I am serious about this – just do it. Be sure to write some highlights down so you know what you are aiming to do next year – you need something documented to refer to as the year progresses. Ideas and ‘plans’ swimming around in your head won’t cut it.

1. “Hope is not a strategy.” ~ Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani

Recognize you actually need a strategy. Really. Truly. Hoping good things will happen – believe it or not – is not a strategy.

2. “A goal with no plan is just a wish.” ~Antoine de Sait-Exupery

Ask yourself – and write these down – what are your goals for 2016? It shouldn’t be a huge list, but 3-4 marketing goals for the upcoming 12 months are a great start.

3. “Everyone is not your customer.” ~Seth Godin

Identify who your audience is– and pay special note to this quote. Recognize it is true. You can’t be all things to all people, so figure out who you really want as your customers.

4. “One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple.” ~Jack Kerouac

What are your offerings? What is your messaging about your company and your offerings?

Then find nice, clean, clear concise words to describe to others what you do.

5. “Managing your brand is not a singular event but a continuous process.” ~Anon

“Promote your strengths. Remind the world why you are special and why it is special to do business with you.” ~Mary Schnack

This is simply a reminder that branding is a continuous process, and you must not only promote your business brand, but your professional/personal brand. Both are very important.

6. “You have to be unique and different and shine in your own way.” ~Lady Gaga

Keep in mind that you want to stand out from your competitors. So figure out, how are you unique and different?

7. “Instead of interrupting, work on attracting.” ~Dharmesh Shah

After all the above is thought through and documented, then it is time to figure out what tactics you should use to reach your audience? A hint: you don’t need more tactics….just be smarter about what you do, and how you execute your tactics.

How will you figure out what is working and what isn’t with your marketing? You must keep on top of what you are doing, and how it is (or isn’t!) working for you – because you need to modify and revise your marketing as needed. Don’t stay stagnant. It’s not a pretty thing to stand still.
